MEXICO: PAN sides with PRD in Guerrero

The traditionally violent southern state of Guerrero goes to the polls to elect a new governor on 30 January. The last week of the campaign proved dramatic: first the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) candidate, Marcos Efrén Parra, withdrew and endorsed the Guerrero Nos Une candidate, Angel Heladio Aguirre. Then, on 27 January, a leak to a Mexico City newspaper, Reforma, claimed that a protected witness, known as “Mateo", had personally handed over US$5m (of a promised US$15m) from a drug-trafficker to Manuel Añorve Baños, the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) candidate for the governorship of Guerrero.
